Pelletier, Pierre-Joseph

   pharmacist, botanist
Born in Clichy-la-Garenne, Pierre-Joseph Pelletier, in his researches, extracted a substance (emetine) from the root of the ipeca plant to be used in the treatment of internal disorders (1817). He also, through his research with Joseph Caventou on cholesterol, discovered strychnine (1818), brucine (1819), veratine, cevadic acid, and quinine (1820). The two also studied vegetal physiology, introducing the word chlorophyll (1818). Pelletier isolated the components narceine and thebaine in opium (1832) and did intense work on dyes and coloring agents, techniques of gilding, and the nature of resins. He was named to the Academy of Sciences in 1840.
